On Tuesday, Aug. 20, former first lady Michelle Obama took the stage at the 2024 Democratic Convention (DNC) in Chicago to pledge support for the sitting vice president and Democratic presidential nominee, Kamala Harris. While her powerful messages and unparalleled rhetorical skills were center stage at the event, the internet is still buzzing about Obama's look (deemed "futuristic" en mass), which many Redditors feel mirrored the hopeful but exigently imperative tenor of her speech.

Obama wore a sleeveless deconstructed suit jacket with a crisscross design by ready-to-wear label MONSE paired with matching navy slacks, Jimmy Choo Scarlett pumps, and silver David Yurman jewelry. Obama's longtime stylist and friend, Meredith Koop, styled the look seen here:

Opinion: Ivana. Marla. Melania. Could Kamala Be Next?
Photo Illustration by Erin O'Flynn/The Daily Beast/Buena Vista Pictures and Getty ImagesThe classic rom-com trope calls for two very different people to be thrown together by chance. They fight and fight and fight… until they fall hopelessly in love.

Donald Trump's repeated statements that Vice President Kamala Harris is "beautiful" suggest that he sees her not just as his bitter rival, but as an attractive woman. To paraphrase Trump's cringey comment that "If Ivanka weren't my daughter, perhaps I'd be dating her," he seems to be signaling, "If Kamala weren't my opponent, perhaps I'd be dating her."

Trump & Harris Each Vow Border Crackdowns as Immigrant Communities Demand Positive Change
Immigration has become one of the central issues of the 2024 race, with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump vowing to expand the draconian policies of his first term and deport 10 million immigrants from the country amid what he calls an "invasion." Democrats, meanwhile, are touting their own border crackdown at the Democratic National Convention this week in Chicago. President Joe Biden celebrated his executive action to block many asylum seekers at the southern U.S. border, and Vice President Kamala Harris promises to hire thousands more border agents if she is elected. We host a roundtable discussion in Chicago with Oscar Chacón, executive director of Alianza Americas, an immigrant rights group; Maria Hinojosa, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, founder of Futuro Media and host of the Latino USA podcast; and Marisa Franco, director and co-founder of Mijente, a national digital organizing hub for Latinx and Chicanx communities.

Tim Walz and the ‘Folksy' Science Behind Sounding All-American
Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast/Getty/ReutersIf you created a word cloud from all Tim Walz's interviews over the last few weeks, the word ‘weird' would be featured prominently, as would ‘football,' ‘Minnesota,' and maybe ‘white guy tacos.' But one word above all would stand out among the vice presidential candidate's vernacular: ‘folksy.'

Walz's supporters use that term: A tweet from screenwriter Adam Best praising the native-Nebraskan's "organic, folksy, straightforward vibe" got 25,000 likes. His detractors use it, too. Glenn Beck railed against the idea that he was the "most folksy dad ever."

The use of folksy may seem spontaneous. But like ‘aw-shucks' with Reagan and ‘malarkey' with Biden, such phrases—and their intention—are not entirely off-the-cuff. They are part of a concentrated effort, going back to Benjamin Franklin and Abraham Lincoln, to create an American brand of English.

Opinion: Michelle Obama Just Reminded America of Her Power
Elizabeth Frantz/ReutersAugust 20 is an important day in American history.

On Aug. 20, 1619, it marked the painful beginning of slavery for Black people in America.

405 years later, on Aug. 20, 2024, Vice President Kamala Harris would officially become the first Black woman in American history to be nominated as a presidential candidate of a major political party.

‘Morning Joe' Airs Hilarious Comparison of DNC ‘Party' With RNC Snoozefest
MSNBCMorning Joe on Wednesday opened with a video showing the difference between the jubilant atmosphere at the Democratic National Convention the night before and the more somber tone at the Republican National Convention last month.

The supercut showed attendees at the Democratic event in Chicago cheering and dancing to loud music in stark contrast to those at the GOP's convention, who politely clap in a quiet hall. MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski summed up the contrast as: "A tale of two roll calls."

"The Democratic National Convention turned… what is usually a lifeless event into a party as delegates pledged support for Vice President Harris," Brzezinski said. "A DJ played chart-topping tracks to represent each state and territory."
