PCWorld has independently confirmed an earlier Bloomberg report that Arm is canceling the architectural license agreement, the agreement that allows Qualcomm to manufacture custom cores, like the company's Oryon processor. Qualcomm called the cancellation notice "more unfounded threats" and that it looks forward to a trial in December that is set to resolve the issue.
In the fall of 2022, Arm sued Qualcomm, seeking an injunction that would have forced Qualcomm to destroy the chip designs that a company called Nuvia developed. Qualcomm bought Nuvia in 2021, in a bid to beef up its own Arm-based CPU designs. Arm, in turn, argued that it should have been allowed to approve the deal and cancelled Nuvia's licenses in 2023, according to Bloomberg. Since then, the suit has quietly simmered without any real action or rhetoric by either side, even as the two sides nailed down a court date in December.
Now, the stakes have been raised significantly. Arm designs its own CPU cores, known as Cortex, and licenses them to companies like Qualcomm, Mediatek, and others. That license remains in place. But Qualcomm is entertaining partners, analysts and media at the Snapdragon Summit in Maui, where th

Car manufacturers will be able to develop new AI voice assistants for their cars thanks to a new partnership with Qualcomm and Google. Qualcomm announced earlier today that it's working with Google on a new AI development system for carmakers.
The new version is based on Android Automotive OS (AAOS), Google's infotainment platform for cars. Qualcomm is offering its Snapdragon Digital Chassis with Google Cloud and AAOS to generate new AI-powered digital cockpits for cars. Qualcomm also unveiled two new chips for powering driving systems including the Snapdragon Cockpit Elite for dashboards and the Snapdragon Ride Elite for self-driving features.
The new interface will allow car drivers and passengers to interact with custom voice assistants, immersive maps and real-time driving updates. Carmakers can use the new system to create their own unique and marketable AI voice assistants that don't require a connection to a smartphone.
Other carmakers have taken steps to try to integrate AI systems in its vehicles. Volkswagen announced plans at CES 2024 that it would integrate ChatGPT in its cars' voice assistants across a range of newer models. After a slow start, AAOS now underpins vehicles from several manufacturers including Chevrolet, Honda, Volvo and Rivian.

Anthropic's latest development gives its Claude AI assistant the ability to control a PC, reportedly just like a person would. The feature, dubbed 'computer use,' entered public beta today. With computer use, Claude can be directed to execute tasks such as "looking at a screen, moving a cursor, clicking buttons, and typing text," according to the company's announcement.
This API enables Claude to translate prompts into computer commands. Developers can use it to automate repetitive tasks, conduct testing and QA, and perform open-ended research. pic.twitter.com/eK0UCGEozm

In theory, this could make the AI even more useful in automating repetitive computer tasks. However, a second blog post focused on computer use acknowledged that this application of Anthropic's AI models is still early in development and, to paraphrase, buggy as heck. The company said that in internal testing, Claude stopped in the middle of an assigned coding task and began opening images of Yellowstone National Park. While that is uncannily human behavior (who doesn't want to take a break to stare at natural beauty during the work day?), it's also a reminder that even the best AI models can have errors.
In addition to unveiling computer use, Anthropic also released an upgraded version of its

When Elon Musk introduced Tesla's robotaxi, the Cybercab, earlier this month, he showed a slide during his presentation that probably looked familiar to Blade Runner 2049 fans. It featured the back of a person wearing a trench coat against a desert-like landscape with high-rise buildings in the background. Now, a producer behind the movie is suing him for copyright infringement. According to The New York Times, Alcon Entertainment accused him of using "AI-created images mirroring scenes from Blade Runner 2049, including one featuring a Ryan Gosling look-alike." It said that it previously denied a request by Musk, Tesla and Warner Bros. Discovery to use imagery from the film as part of the Cybercab event. The companies were also named as defendants in the lawsuit.
Alcon called Tesla's use of AI to create images nearly identical to scenes from the movie an "intentionally malicious gambit." It argued that by connecting the product announcement to the movie, the automaker made the event "more attractive to a global audience" and misappropriated "the Blade Runner 2049 brand to help sell Teslas." In its lawsuit, Alcon said that the connection between Musk and its film has a financial impact on the company, even going so far as calling the defendants' actions as a "massive economic theft," because it's currently in talks with other potential automative partners for its upcoming Blade Runner 2099 television series.
"Any prudent brand considering any Tesla partnership has to take Musk's m

In a presentation to reporters, Qualcomm cited PCWorld's video review, "Did Intel Just Save X86?", as a source for its refutation, including benchmark scores that Qualcomm claimed could only be obtained using samples of Core Ultra Series 200 (Lunar Lake) laptops that were sent to reporters, not sold on the open market.
Qualcomm executives used the video by PCWorld's Gordon Mah Ung as evidence, precisely because he was able to obtain two virtually identical laptops from Dell, with the same capacity, battery, and screen size. The two laptops differed only in their choice of processor, a relative rarity in the laptop world, but one that allowed him to directly compare one chip to the other.
Qualcomm director of engineering Sriram Dixit highlighted something our Lunar Lake print review showed, which he said Intel glossed over: That when a Lunar Lake laptop was tested only on battery, performance plunged.
Dixit briefed reporters slightly before Qualcomm announced its second-generation Snapdragon Oryon core for smartphones, a chip that Qualcomm claimed could outperform a Lunar Lake PC. Qualcomm isn't saying whether the Oryon core will come to PCs, and a company representative declined to c

Fortunately, we now know that ChatGPT is really just a glorified chatbot and it's far from ready to replace real-world workers, let alone take over the world. Some have even swung the opposite direction, claiming these AI chatbots are novelty gimmicks and basically useless.
I wouldn't go that far, though. In fact, when I tried using ChatGPT in my day-to-day life, I was surprised by how beneficial it was. It's a tool — and like any tool, you have to know how to use it to get any value out of it.
Here are some real things I've done this year using ChatGPT and the various ways it has actually improved my life.
ChatGPT helped me learn how to code
Is ChatGPT itself good at coding? That depends. If you were to ask most programmers if ChatGPT could do their jobs for them, they'd emphasize how far away we are from that reality just yet.
But as a tool for guidance and aid in understanding syntax, concepts, and other programming-related things? It's not bad at all. So while ChatGPT developers have been working on their own obsolescence, I've been using ChatGPT to help me learn to code.
I've wanted to make a game for years, but it wasn't until 2024 that I finally sat down and took steps to make it happen. I'd previously learned BASIC about 30 years ago and I'd dabbled in Python and Flash's ActionScri

It doesn't matter whether you use the monitor for working, gaming, or just browsing. In the long term, an incorrectly adjusted monitor can damage your eyes or cause headaches. Here's how to avoid the biggest mistakes.
1. Resolution and scaling
First, you should make sure that your monitor is set to the native resolution. This is the highest resolution that your monitor supports and offers the best image quality.
Windows usually recognizes this automatically. However, it is possible that when you switch to a different screen mode such as split screen mode, the resolution may become confused. If this is the case, you can change the screen resolution by right-clicking on your desktop and selecting Display Settings from the menu. You will then find the function you are looking for in the Scale and Layout section.
Tip: If you change the screen resolution, you should always keep the correct picture format. This means 16:9 or 4:3, for example, to prevent the image from appearing distorted.
In the scaling settings, you can also specify how large the applications are displayed on the screen. We recommend 150 percent for better readability. If you have a second monitor, you can also use it in portrait format to make it easi
