Live AI deepfake video makes ‘pig butchering' scams more convincing

A ring of scammers in Hong Kong managed to use live "deepfake" video to steal millions from their victims.

Police in Hong Kong arrested 27 people who operated out of an office and conspired to rip off wealthy people by pretending to be attractive romance prospects and getting them to invest big bucks in phony cryptocurrency schemes.

The methodology is familiar: Set yourself up as an attractive stranger with an alluring profile photo, slowly build up a rapport with the victim through text messages, and casually hint at the prospect of vast profits with a new crypto platform. Once the victim puts real money into the cryptocurrency scam, you vanish.

The new twist for this particular ring involved the use of fake real-time video to set their victims' minds at ease. When a mark got suspicious and asked the scammer for a video call, they obliged — and used deepfake software tools to make the live video participant look like the attractive woman in the original AI-generated profile photo.

Satisfied that their romantic prospects appeared to be legitimate, the victims were taken for the equivalent of $46 million USD. Though the ring was based in Hong Kong, its victims were taken from mainland China, Taiwan, India, and Singapore, according to Ars Technica.

Microsoft confirms bug that leaves ~9GB of undeletable files in Windows 11

Not only have we seen blue screen crashes related to gaming and Intel drivers and disappearing mouse cursors, but the major Windows 11 24H2 update apparently also creates an enormous cache folder during installation that can't be deleted. How enormous are we talking? An impressive 8.63GB in size, a sizable chunk of all but the largest of drives.

Update on October 16, 2024: As of two days ago, Microsoft has confirmed the existence of this mysterious bug but emphasizes that it's only a false alarm. When running Windows Update Cleanup, the files themselves are properly deleted but Disk Cleanup mistakenly continues to show that the storage is being used. This is just a "reporting error" and Microsoft is working on a resolution.

Sony's ULT Wear wireless headphones are down to a record-low price
Sony makes some of the best headphones around at the higher end but it has a broad range of options available at other price points as well. Our pick for the best wireless headphones is the company's WH-1000XM5, which will typically run you $400. If you can't swing that, the mid-range ULT Wear headphones are a decent option, especially since they're on sale. They've dropped to $148, which is $52 off the regular price of $200. That marks an all-time low price for this model.

These are the first headphones to use ULT Power Sound, a new iteration of Sony's Extra Bass lineup. So it's safe to say you can expect plenty of oomph on the low end with the ULT Wear.
