 Kevin Dietsch/GettyWhen The New Yorker's editor David Remnick watched Joe Biden's disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump, it was the culmination of long-held doubts. On Saturday, he published a column headlined "The Reckoning of Joe Biden," calling for the president to end a re-election campaign that Remnick called "a national endangerment."
Remnick told the Daily Beast, "It's just become more and more evident, and the debate was just the kind of breakthrough moment."
The column is the latest salvo from a media elite demanding Biden step aside. Those making the call have included Biden's long-term friend Thomas Friedman, who wrote in the New York Times that he wept as he watched the debate. Remnick told the Beast that, unlike others, he does not have a personal relationship with the 46th president. "I don't know Joe Biden," Remnick said. "That's not my role."

The day after the debate was marked by mass panic among Democratic Party elites who frankly should have been aware of this problem—and moved to fix it—many months, or even years ago. It was also marked by "Double Haters," like myself, really leaning in on the "Double" portion of the phrase. Never Trump. Never Biden.
While former President Barack Obama offered a show of support for Biden, it was made before any real, meaningful polling was done to gauge how bad the debate really was for the U.S. president. My guess is that by the time we get to next Wednesday, we'll be in a position where Biden is found to be trailing Trump by a significant, potentially irreversible margin in all swing states—and potentially some states that have not to-date been on the swing state list.

I had a 7.30 p.m. appearance on CNBC and a question to answer on a loosely floated topic: Do debates matter any more? I dialed national and local reporters, strategists, analysts, campaign veterans, winners and losers, Republicans and Democrats alike.
All had the same basic answer. This far out from election day, unless there is a major gaffe or a major punch landed, it'll be forgotten within 48 hours—maybe less, given our proximity to the July 4th holiday.
