A gathering of South Carolina's political elite paid tribute to the late senator's career against a backdrop of a highly competitive race to replace him.
The senator's funeral services are in Columbia, the capital. His remains will be buried Wednesday afternoon in Pickens County, S.C., where he was born and raised.
