Mike Segar/ReutersElon Musk amplified a flurry of false claims and misinformation Wednesday in a period of online activity which, even by his own standards, was fairly unhinged.
The billionaire edgelord is no stranger to a reckless post, already attracting the ire of the White House this week over a tweet in which he wrote "no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala." Musk deleted that post— which came just hours after the second apparent assassination attempt of Donald Trump—while passing it off as a joke, though the Secret Service apparently didn't see the funny side.
Some people might decide to be more cautious online after such a snafu.

Fox NewsDonald Trump appeared to express surprise Wednesday that "a woman," Kamala Harris, is "somehow doing better" than Joe Biden in the election race against him.
In a freewheeling and mostly lighthearted appearance on the Fox News talk show Gutfeld!, Trump as is typical rattled off a few recycled old bits—military pilots who look "better" than Tom Cruise and told him they saw UFOs, was brought back from June, for example.
But when it came time to discuss his second Democratic opponent in this year's presidential election, the Republican nominee appeared taken aback that someone of the opposite gender was doing comparatively well.

Brendan McDermid/ReutersDonald Trump—by many accounts, not a big reader—apparently doesn't even know what his wife, Melania, wrote in her soon-to-be released memoir.
"Go out and get her book. She just wrote a book. I hope she said good things about--I don't know, I didn't. So busy," Trump said Wednesday during a campaign speech in Uniondale, New York. "She just wrote a book called Melania. Go out and buy it. It's great. And if she says bad things about me, I'll call you all up and I'll say, ‘Don't buy it. Get rid of it.'"
The book, which the former first lady has been teasing on her social media platforms, is set for release Oct. 8. In a post on Wednesday, Melania promoted it while defending her decision to model nude.

Photo Illustration by Thomas Levinson/The Daily Beast/GettyPollsters and data scientists are all over the map on what to make of a new poll that finds Kamala Harris with a substantial lead over Donald Trump in two crucial battleground states.
In Pennsylvania, which comes with 19 electoral votes, Harris leads Trump, 51 percent to 45 percent—outside the margin of error, according to the survey released Wednesday by Quinnipiac University. Last month, Harris had just a three-point lead. In Michigan, the poll has her leading Trump 50 percent to 45 percent with the candidates essentially tied in the third battleground of Wisconsin.
"Three crucial swing states wave a red flag at the Trump campaign," Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy said in a statement.

Michael M. Santiago/Getty Images"Malicious cyber actors" from Iran dangled sensitive material about former President Donald Trump's re-election campaign in front of President Joe Biden's campaign team, according to U.S. authorities.
Three federal agencies said Wednesday that the "stolen, non-public" information was emailed to journalists as well as individuals "associated with the Biden campaign." The operation took place over June and July this year, before the president suspended his White House bid.
"There is currently no information indicating those recipients replied," read a joint statement from the FBI, CISA, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
