A U.S. official tells NBC News there are early indications that the passenger plane that crashed in Kazakhstan may have been hit by a Russian anti-aircraft system. The official said if it turns out to be the case, it would be more evidence of Russia's recklessness in its war with Ukraine.

The flight was en route from the Azerbaijani capital of Baku to Grozny, in Russia's south, when it diverted and attempted an emergency landing in Kazakhstan.

Dramatic video shows an Azerbaijan Airlines plane hitting the ground and bursting into flames near the city of Aktau in southwestern Kazakhstan. Dozens of passengers were killed, but video from the crash site also shows some of the survivors were able to walk away from the wreckage.
