GettyGretchen Whitmer, the Michigan governor seen as one of the Democrats' best prospects to replace Joe Biden, has ruled out running, Politico reported Monday.
But the swing state leader delivered a damning message to the campaign aide whom she called, the outlet's Jonathan Martin reported, saying that the president's debate performance will cost him Michigan.
Whitmer called the campaign chair, Jen O'Malley Dillon Friday, after a day of frenzied speculation that she would be a frontrunner if Biden could be persuaded to quit. The second-term swing state governor, however, told O'Malley Dillon that she "hated" her name being floated and that she was loyal to the president.

Mandel Ngan/AFP via GettyThe fallout from President Joe Biden's abysmal debate performance last week reached his wife's ill-timed Vogue cover story Monday, with first lady Jill Biden using the piece to signal that her husband isn't about to quit his re-election race.
In an editor's note at the top of the article, the magazine highlighted that Joe Biden's monumentally dreadful showing against Donald Trump on Thursday had "spurred a discussion" about whether the president should remain the presumptive Democratic nominee.
Speaking from Camp David, where the Biden clan holed up over the weekend, Jill Biden told Vogue that the family "will not let those 90 minutes define the four years he's been president. We will continue to fight." She added that her 81-year-old husband "will always do what's best for the country."

France's far right has won the first round of voting in a snap election, followed closely by the left, as President Emmanuel Macron's coalition is trounced. We go to Paris for an update as the far-right National Rally party of Marine Le Pen shocked the French establishment after winning the most votes in the first round of parliamentary elections on Sunday. A broad alliance of left-wing parties calling itself the New Popular Front came second, while President Emmanuel Macron's centrist bloc fell to third place. Macron called the snap election after the National Rally won the most seats in last month's vote for European Parliament, even though his own presidential term runs until 2027. A second round of voting on July 7 will decide the final makeup of the National Assembly, but if the National Rally wins outright, it will mark the first time the far right has governed in France since the Nazi occupation during World War II. "This decision was timed at a moment when the far right was at its strongest historical position in modern French political history, and they've capitalized on that," says Harrison Stetler, an independent journalist and teacher based in Paris. He says that while the left has already committed to forming "a republican front against the far right," Macron's centrist forces have sent "mixed signals" on joining forces after a campaign in which they recklessly portrayed both the left and the right as equally dangerous to the country.

Chris Lehmann, D.C. bureau chief for The Nation, discusses the ongoing fallout from Thursday's first presidential debate of 2024 and mounting pressure on President Biden to drop out of the race amid questions about his age and mental fitness. "It appears that Biden and his inner circle of advisers are doubling down," says Lehmann. "They took this incredible risk to do this debate … and they're now saying it's a greater risk to change horses."

"We'll do the morning War Room to kick off a Monday just like everywhere, but I'll do it outside the prison," Bannon told The Daily Beast. "Then when I finish, I'll drop the mic and then go surrender."
Once he's officially Bureau of Prisons (BOP) inmate No. 05635-509 at the low-security FCI Danbury, guest hosts will keep War Room churning out pro-MAGA messaging and crusading for Donald Trump's 2024 reelection.

Mandel Ngan/AFP via Getty ImagesJoe Biden's family told him Sunday to fight on after his disastrous debate performance in a verdict delivered at a Camp David gathering for an Annie Leibovitz photoshoot.
The president's wife, children and grandchildren were at the presidential retreat as a new poll showed three out of four voters do not believe the 81-year-old should seek a second term in the wake of Thursday night's mumbling, stumbling performance.
But instead of counseling the president to announce that he would not seek a second term, the Bidens blamed his staff for failing to prepare him to take on Donald Trump, The New York Times reported.

Erin O'Flynn/Daily BeastIn a shocking first round of voting for the French National Assembly, the anti-immigration National Rally party, led by Marine Le Pen, secured a decisive victory in exit polls with 34% of the vote.
The result brings the nationalist party with an anti-Semitic history closer to power than ever before, and could set the stage for Le Pen's protege, a 28-year-old right wing leader, Jordan Bardella, to become prime minister after a second round of voting on July 7.
France's prime minister is currently Gabriel Attal, who made history when he was appointed by Macron in January, becoming the first openly gay holder of the office. Attal, now 35, is currently the youngest head of government in the world.

Reuters/Kevin LamarqueA beleaguered Joe Biden was holed up in Camp David on Sunday, reportedly preparing to discuss the future of his re-election campaign with close family members—although not, perhaps, with the one he should actually be talking to.
Three days after a disastrous performance in Thursday's first presidential debate against Donald Trump, the 81-year-old faces a torrent of calls—including from friends and former supporters—to drop out of the race for the sake of the nation.
But even those considered genuine Bidenworld "insiders" cannot agree on who might be best-placed to counsel the president as he faces the most consequential decision of his life: his wife of 47 years, Jill Biden; or the woman who has been at his side throughout his long political career, younger sister Valerie Biden Owens.
