This year, Christmas and Hanukkah coincide on the calendar, and while many similarities end there, they have in common the celebration of miracles in the past and gift-giving in the present.

We found a heart-warming series of stories in the Washington Post.. They remind us that sometimes the greatest gifts go beyond the commercial and end in ourselves.

Wash Post:

Do you see yourself somewhere in these snippets of life from the Post?

  • Have you been on the receiving end of an act of kindness?

  • Have you done something quietly that no one knows about — perhaps even the recipient?

  • What is worth more — money or time?

  • Happy holidays!

My adoption.

In 1966 my father was finishing up his residency at Case Western Reserve's School of Medicine, when he decided to go the few blocks home to the apartment he shared with my mother on Superior Ave. and have lunch.

As he walked in the door, the phone was ringing. Of course, in 1966, they had no answering machine, (never mind cell phones.)

When he picked up the phone, it was a friend of his who had graduated the year before and who was now practicing medicine in Atlanta.

He told my father that he was glad he had reached him, because there was a position available for someone just like him at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta.

My father replied that he hadn't even considered working for the CDC.

There was a moment of silence on the other end.

Then, the friend said, "It's an exempt position."

This wasn't a job offer so much as it was a personal favor being done by someone who liked my father enough to bother to do it.

My father had just assumed that he would probably be drafted into the military for some kind of service related to medicine and Vietnam. That conversation changed everything. He called the CDC, talked to the right person, got the position, and my parents moved to Atlanta - where, a year later, they adopted me.

Sometimes, an entire life can hinge on a phone call. Without my parents, who would I have been? My birth mother wasn't interested in raising me, and, (as I learned later,) wasn't sober enough to do it anyway for much of my childhood. Without my parents, I may well have wound up just one more piece of human flotsam, dead and bloating on the beach of life.

They are the greatest gift I have ever received.

Again, thanks for the sharing. We could have an interesting conversation over a meal and a drink.

Have a great year.

Speaking to and for all Americans, an immortal lady of the theater gives us hope for the future: "Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence insights violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others we all lose." -- Meryl Streep
Meryl Streep was already a legend before her speech at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards, but she gained another level of fame in her takedown of President-elect Donald Trump and his policies.

My wife of 35 years! We were married 18 DEC and that w/o exception was the best gift ever; and it came from my divorce lawyer. He told me about her and we simply clicked - met 18 OCT and married 2 months later!

One Christmas Eve with a wife and two small children, no money for gifts; a tremendous family from our church came to carol and left a card. When we opened it there was $100 in it. At that time in our life that was just like someone gave us a million.
