Smart Tags For Your Supply Chain Radio-frequency-identification (RFID) chips, which can track individual items through the entire supply chain and onto the store floor, are often touted as the path to supply chain nirvana for retailers and consumer product companies. But the nascent technology isn't ready for the demands of most of today’s supply chains, and the IT costs required to support its applications can be steep. Proceed with caution.
The take-away: Investments in RFID pay off in certain situations. A careful examination of the supply chain reveals whether and where the technology can benefit companies today.
