A wholesale shift in European groceries
Europe's food and drink wholesale markets offer plenty of opportunities for large food retailers hungry to grow—yet most have been overlooked. These markets, which include smaller retailers as well as food service providers, have seemed too fragmented and resistant to economies of scale for large retailers to take them seriously. Now, though, structural changes should enable retailers to apply to the wholesale trade their skills in range management, logistics, and marketing.

The take-away: Large retailers that can transfer their scale-based capabilities to the right opportunities in Europe’s wholesale markets will be poised to earn large revenues from them in the future.
