Travel tips for retailers Why are leading retailers accelerating their international expansion despite the difficulties of running far-flung, people-intensive retail operations? Because they believe that foreign growth is the only way to satisfy the shareholders' demand for higher earnings. Retailers looking to expand abroad have three primary models for structuring their expansion: replication, performance management, and reinvention. Each model makes different trade-offs among the pace and extent of growth it offers, the complexity of the resulting organization, and the rate at which its potential synergies can be realized.
The take-away: Among the options open to retailers aiming to expand abroad, reinvention offers the greatest scope for growth.
